Phonics and Reading
We want to help all our children to be successful readers who have a passion for reading for life.
We hope that the information on this page will help you to understand our approach to reading and phonics. If you have any questions about reading or phonics please speak to your child's class teacher.
We teach ‘Letters and sounds’ systematically daily. This is also consolidated during all lessons. The children are introduced to this as they join school and progress through Phonics Phases throughout EYFS and KS1. They learn how to read, write and spell words using their phonic knowledge. To help children progress in their phonetic knowledge we have a new range of reading books that reinforce the phonics we are teaching.
As children progress and no longer need phonic lessons we introduce spelling patterns e.g. suffixes and prefixes along with practice of sentence structure and grammar.
We teach the skills that enable children to become confident and competent readers. We use Jelly and Bean reading books to enhance phonic teaching in the Foundation Stage and KS1. We also have specific phonics books, which enable the embedding of sounds the children have been learning. Our library provides a rich and diverse selection of reading materials. Children from Year Two up also take part in daily Guided Reading sessions.
