Phonics and Reading
We want to help all our children to be successful readers who have a passion for reading for life.
We hope that the information on this page will help you to understand our approach to reading and phonics. If you have any questions about reading or phonics please speak to your child's class teacher.
We teach 'Synthetic Phonics’ three times a week using the Sound Discovery programme. This is also consolidated during all lessons. The children are introduced to this in our Reception Class and children progress through the steps during Key Stage 1 and 2. They learn how to read, write and spell words using their phonic knowledge. To help children progress in their phonetical knowledge we have a new range of reading books that reinforce the phonics we are teaching.
As children progress and no longer need phonic lessons we introduce spelling patterns e.g. suffixes and prefixes along with practice of sentence structure and grammar.
We teach the skills that enable children to become confident and competent readers. We use Jelly and Bean reading books to enhance phonic teaching in the Foundation Stage and KS1. Our library provides a rich and diverse selection of reading materials.
